One of my favorite references dealing statistically with the effects of religion on society is this: Cross-National Correlations of Quantifiable Societal Health with Popular Religiosity and Secularism in the Prosperous Democracies.

Now there's a follow-up study here: The Chronic Dependence of Popular Religiosity upon Dysfunctional Psychosociological Conditions.
